This statute determines which county's juvenile court can hear a case. Generally, the case is heard in the county where the child lives. If the child committed a delinquent act in another county, the case can be heard there. For abuse or neglect cases, the case can be heard in the county where the child is located when the case is filed.

(a) A proceeding under this part may be commenced in the county in which the child resides. (A) A person under eighteen (18) years of age. See Tennessee Code 37-1-102Custody: means the control of actual physical care of the child and includes the right and responsibility to provide for the physical, mental, moral and emotional well-being of the child. See Tennessee Code 37-1-102Department: means the department of children's services. See Tennessee Code 37-1-102Jurisdiction: (1) The legal authority of a court to hear and decide a case. Concurrent jurisdiction exists when two courts have simultaneous responsibility for the same case. (2) The geographic area over which the court has authority to decide cases.Juvenile court: means the general sessions court in all counties of this state, except in those counties and municipalities in which special juvenile courts are provided by law, and "judge" means judge of the juvenile court. See Tennessee Code 37-1-102(b) If delinquent or unruly conduct is alleged, the proceeding may be commenced in the county in which the acts constituting the alleged delinquent or unruly conduct occurred. (c) If dependency or neglect is alleged, the proceeding may be brought in the county in which the child is present when it is commenced. (d) Proceedings to terminate parental rights shall be brought pursuant to § 36-1-113. (e) If unruly conduct is alleged against a child in the custody of the department of children’s services, the proceeding may be brought in the juvenile court exercising continuing jurisdiction under § 37-1-103 or it may be brought in the juvenile court that issued the order granting custody to the department.
