What does this charge mean?

It is illegal for a pharmacist or pharmacy technician to give a patient a different drug than what the doctor prescribed without the doctor's approval. A violation is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a fine up to $50.

(a) Except as provided in title 53, chapter 10, part 2, it shall be unlawful for any pharmacist, or any pharmacy technician or pharmacy intern under the supervision of a pharmacist who dispenses prescriptions, drugs, and medicines, to substitute any drug or device different from the one ordered, or deviate in any manner from the requirements of an order or prescription, without the approval of the prescriber, as defined in § 63-10-204. (A) Substances recognized as drugs in the United States Pharmacopoeia, official Homeopaths Pharmacopoeia of the United States, or official National Formulary, or any supplement to any of them. See Tennessee Code 39-17-402Pharmacist: means a licensed pharmacist as defined by the laws of this state, and where the context so requires, the owner of a store or other place of business where controlled substances are compounded or dispensed by a licensed pharmacist. See Tennessee Code 39-17-402(b) A violation of this section is a Class C misdemeanor.
