Expiration of licenses

(a) Every driver license issued by the department on or after January 1, 2016, shall be issued for a period of eight (8) years excluding Class P licenses, which shall expire one (1) year from the date of initial issuance. The commissioner may issue an initial license or renew a license that shall remain valid for three (3) to eight (8) years in order to transition licensees to an eight-year renewal cycle. License fees due under § 55-50-323 shall be prorated to reflect the appropriate fee for a renewal cycle of lesser length than eight (8) years; provided, that for Class D, Class M, and photo identification licenses, there shall be deducted from the gross prorated fee the amount of two dollars ($2.00). (c) Any person issued a license or permit prior to July 1, 2004, who is subject to § 55-50-331(g) shall, upon renewal or reapplication, receive, if otherwise eligible, a temporary license, which shall expire in accordance with § 55-50-331(g).
