It is illegal to litter more than 5 pounds but no more than 10 pounds (or more than 7.5 cubic feet but no more than 15 cubic feet) of trash. A violation is a Class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine. The court must also order you to remove litter from highways, parks, or public areas for up to 80 hours, and may require up to 8 hours of work at a recycling center.

The charge is enhanced to a Class E felony (1-6 years prison) in certain circumstances, such as for repeat offenses or especially serious property damage.
